Innovation and Entrepreneurship Academy + NYIT Venture Fund

University-wide entrepreneurship academy launched May 2025 with a $5 million NYIT Venture Fund. Combines educational programming with direct capital investment in student, faculty, and alumni startups.

Components:

  1. Startup Tech Central — Maker space and startup hub opened October 2025 in the Midge Karr Fine Arts Design Center (Long Island campus). Provides maker spaces, mentorship programs, and startup training.
  2. NESTS (Necessary Eleven Steps to Tech Startup) — 3-credit experiential course open to all students. Students launch a tech startup in 15 weeks. Culminates in FlyOff Demo Day. Produced 30 student-led startups in first 6 months.
  3. Technology Entrepreneurship Minor (15 credits) — Jointly offered by College of Engineering & Computing Sciences, School of Management, and ETIC.
  4. $5M NYIT Venture Fund — Invests in startups from students, faculty, alumni, and qualified entrepreneurs. Governance through an investment advisory committee. Specific check sizes and equity terms not yet publicly disclosed.

Assessment

Transformational addition to NYIT's entrepreneurship infrastructure. The $5M venture fund is exceptional for a university of this size and constitutes the most material venture-funding commitment among institutions in this vault outside major research universities. The NESTS program demonstrates rapid early output (30 startups in 6 months). However, the fund is very new (2025) with no publicly documented portfolio companies, check sizes, or return data yet.
